“Rehraas Sahib” is a composition from the Sikh scripture Guru Granth Sahib. It is traditionally recited by Sikhs in the evening, hence the term “Rehraas,” which means “evening prayer” or “ritual.” This collection includes hymns (shabads) written by Sikh Gurus, particularly Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Angad Dev Ji, Guru Amar Das Ji, Guru Ram Das Ji, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, and Guru Gobind Singh Ji. This bani also includes compositions by Bhagats (saints) whose writings appeared in Guru Granth Sahib, such as Kabir Ji, Namdev Ji, Ravidas Ji, and others.
In terms of timing, Rehraas Sahib is recited in the evening, usually after sunset and before the stars show. It is a ritual that helps Sikhs end the day with contemplative thought and thanks to the Divine. The recitation of this bani is seen as a vital component of everyday Sikh devotion, serving as a means of seeking spiritual comfort and direction. Sikhs use hymns to seek divine protection, wisdom, and grace, building a stronger connection with the Almighty. The practice of reciting Rehraas Sahib promotes humility and thankfulness while strengthening compassion, righteousness, and selflessness in daily life. Its recital, whether in community or solo contemplation, promotes tranquility and spiritual fulfillment, adding significant spiritual depth to the Sikh heritage.
