Japji Sahib (ਜਪੁਜੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ) is the initial sacred composition included in the primary Sikh holy scripture, the Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Japji Sahib was composed by Guru Nanak Dev Ji the founder of the Sikh tradition and its first spiritual guide. The prayer is written in the Gurmukhi script, predominantly in Punjabi, with influences from Sanskrit and Persian. The profound spiritual teachings of Japuji Sahib are its core.

The Mool Mantar, a concise statement captures the core beliefs of Sikhism. The prayer is composed of 38 pauris, or stanzas, and one shabad at the end. Emphasizing the value of devotion, humility, and moral behavior, each pauri explores different facets of spirituality, ethics, and the nature of the divine. Japuji Sahib is recited daily by devout Sikhs as part of their morning prayers. Its verses not only offer spiritual guidance, but they also serve as a philosophical foundation for understanding the divine and one’s place in the world. The prayer’s teachings advocate for a life of truth, compassion, and selfless service, reflecting the core values of Sikhism.
